Haiku for our times

We come together

in a common search for truth;

we won’t be silent.

Symbolic gestures

are useless, we need real deeds;

the Voice is a start.

Let’s do the right thing;

respect First Nations people

and give them a voice.

Prove you’re not racist;

acknowledge your privilege,

and accord respect.

Our history’s black

with violence, red with blood;

we must own our shame.

Voice, treaty and truth;

partnering to build justice,

inching us forward.

Compassion, common

sense, understanding and truth;

let these things prevail.

White privilege, blind

and ungenerous, never

conceding an inch.

I’ll be voting ‘No,’

he adamantly declares;

doesn’t give reasons.

They have been frightened

by exaggerated claims.

But things have to change.

Deep prejudices,

unknown and unadmitted,

threaten our future.

Older white people

grew up without the stories,

remain in darkness.

Now we know. Murder,

massacre, dispossession;

our national shame.

Many the children

taken from their families;

the traumas abound.

We must not retreat

from the racists; their hateful

bones tremble with fear.

The darkness thickens.

Even more reason to tend

the flickering flame.

So much selfishness,

failure to see our neighbours;

we must learn to care.

Let love be your guide.

Plant seeds of justice and hope.

Tend them ‘til they bloom.

Prepare

haiku of announcement

Located in time

and in space, the arrival

of Baptiser John.

The wilderness voice

of God echoes through John’s head,

compels him to speak.

Turn away from sin!

When they come for his message:

John baptises them

Isaiah wrote it:

A voice shouts in the wild place,

preparing the way.

Earthworks metaphor,

a track is cleared for the one

who brings salvation.

Valleys will be filled

and mountains will be levelled,

the rough ways made smooth.

A big metaphor

for a cosmic happening:

the promised one comes!

Make straight the way

Haiku to clear the Shadows

He was light’s shadow,

pointing to the shining One

in whose glow he stood.

He is not the light,

but he points to one who comes

that we might know life.

Religious leaders

came to listen, questioning,

Are you he who comes?

Not the Messiah,

nor am I Elijah, or

another prophet.

If none of these, then

who are you? I am a voice

from the wild places.

I’m the voice that shouts,

Make straight the way, be ready

for the Lord who comes.

Among you stands one

far greater than me. You will

know him when he comes.

It's a beginning

Haiku for getting wet

In Jordan’s waters
John calls folk to turn to God
and baptises them.

Leave your sin behind,
God’s kingdom is near at hand,
embrace God’s new way.

Leaving Galilee
and his quiet village life,
Jesus comes to John.

Jordan’s waters call;
Jesus comes to be baptised.
John is hesitant.

It’s a beginning,
says Jesus. Let’s do it right:
for now, baptise me.

Signs come from above,
as water pours from his brow.
A dove and a voice.

A retrospective
voice of divine approval,
from gospel writers.

In his baptism,
as in ours, the call to serve
and to live full true.

Tell us plainly

Haiku of the sheep

Who are you? they ask.
Tell us plainly, are you he
who God is sending?

You’re not serious,
he answered them. I’ve told you,
but you won’t believe.

You aren’t intrested
in what I have to tell you,
so stop pretending.

My sheep hear my voice,
they listen to my teachings
and they follow me.

I give them my life
and so we walk together
towards God’s kingdom.

They need have no fear;
I hold these sheep in my hand.
God gave them to me.

We act together,
the Father and I; working
to bring life and hope.

High expectations

Haiku of anticipation

High expectations
reverberate through Judah:
has the time arrived?

The baptising man;
we’ve been waiting for so long,
could he be the one?

They put it to him:
Are you the Christ-Messiah?
He answered them: No!

I wash with water
baptising to cleanse your sin;
he is so much more.

He comes bringing fire
to fill you with the Spirit;
set your hearts ablaze.

When the candidates
had all been baptised by John,
Jesus himself comes.

As he is praying
the doors of heaven open
Spirit-dove descends.

Heaven’s voice is heard,
(whisper, thunder, who can say?)
My beloved Son!

When the time was ripe

Haiku of anticipation

When the time was ripe
he came. John the forerunner,
preaching, baptizing.

Across the region
his message was heard: Repent
and be forgiven!

In the wilderness
a voice was heard, crying out:
Prepare the Lord’s way!

Metaphorical
earthworks describe a coming,
wond’rous, bringing life.

Paths will be straightened,
mountains and hills made level,
valleys shall be filled.

Rough ways will be smoothed
and all humankind shall see
God’s full salvation.

Get yourselves ready!
Make the most of this new thing
that God is doing!

Good shepherd Jesus

haiku for sheep

Good shepherd Jesus
looks with love upon his sheep,
gives himself for them.

No paid employee;
his commitment to his flock
is deep and caring.

He won’t run away
when things get tough and scary,
like when the wolves come.

A fine metaphor,
this shepherd-sheep partnership.
Jesus and his friends.

I know my own well,
and they know me; listening
to the things I say.

Lots of diff’rent sheep
in lots of diff’rent places:
all belong to me.

There will be one flock,
there will be one shepherd, too.
God’s love will shape us.

I lay down my life
for my sheep, then take it up,
to share risen life.

Prepare a path

Haiku of readiness

The Baptiser came;
a voice, calling, defiant.
Preparing a path.

In the wilderness;
broken stones and tangled weeds
of human despair.

Through the wilderness
one is coming to bring hope;
a way must be found.

It is drawing near,
this strange kingdom of light, life
and revolution.

Make yourselves ready,
bring forth the repentance fruits;
grace and compassion.

Through the scrub he comes
with his words of love and life;
most unexpected.

Crying in the wilderness

Crying in the wilderness,
weeping in the bush;
feeling some of the pain, fear,
despair and disappointment.

The prophets have been silenced;
only their tears remain,
dripping unseen from holy cheeks.

They say the Lord is coming.
Perhaps it is the tears,
the necessary tears,
by which our hearts are prepared.

Weeping in the wilderness,
crying in the bush.

Yes, I know the exegesis is dodgey, but it might hold some truth, anyway.

Sharing the crumbs

  Here's a fun little song for Sunday, set to a well known folk tune, at least here in Australia. A bit irregular, but the driving 3/4 r...
