Behold, God's wonder.

Haiku for the weary

Gaze at creation,

the prophet-poet declares;

behold God’s wonder!

From earth’s foundations

the evidence has been there

for the Lord’s glory.

God who stretches out

the heavens like a curtain

makes kings seem as nought.

Like new plantings, sown,

taking root; God breathes on them.

They wither to dust.

None can equal God.

Look at the stars, how they shine;

God made, named each one.

O people of God,

surely you know that nothing

is hid from God’s eyes.

God is eternal,

beyond our comprehension;

the unsearchable.

God upholds the faint

and strengthens the powerless;

never grows weary.

Even youths will faint

and grow weary; and the young

will fall, exhausted.

Those who trust in God

shall rise on wings, like eagles,

They will not tire.

In the beginning

Haiku of creation

In the beginning.

Top marks for the opening,

you bible writers!

The earth was formless

until the wind from God swept

across the waters.

God spoke and light came,

sun and moon, day and night: thus

happened the first day.

Creation’s story

follows an orderly path:

land, plants, animals.

Birds traverse the sky

and fish occupy the sea;

God saw it was good.

Cattle and crawlies,

wild animals find a home

amidst the earth’s dust.

God’s pleased with the work

so far; completes creation

sculpting humankind.

They will be like us,

God decides; we will put them

in charge of it all.

What were you thinking,

God, entrusting the planet

to such flawed creatures?

Go and lie down, God,

you’ve earned a rest. And reflect

upon what you’ve done.

New Creation Hope

Haiku for an ideal world

New creation hope;

a new heaven, a new earth.

We could do with that.

The old earth has failed;

its people weren’t up to it.

Not enough justice.

Renew your people,

God. We can do with having

our lives upended.

In Jerusalem

God rejoices, takes delight

in all God’s people.

All weeping will end

the cries of distress will pass

when God makes us new.

Death is in retreat

as longevity commands

the lives of us all.

Those who plant vineyards

will enjoy the fruit; labour

will not be in vain.

Peace and harmony,

abundant blessings will rest

upon God’s people.

The wolf and the lamb

feed together; imaging

God’s new reign of peace.

The day is coming

when power meets its limits

and justice prevails.

Spirit

Spirit

Below the sun’s relentless rays
the red earth bakes hard,
loosens with the passing feet and hooves
of creatures, wild and domesticated;
becoming dust again. Human feet,
some clothed in boot and shoe for protection
from hot earth and its sharp and stony projections,
others toughened by their habitual nakedness,
add to the wear of the animals.
The soil holds life,
waiting patiently for water
from largely cloudless skies.
With rock and tree and hill it holds stories,
a spirit library waiting for the singing;
waiting for the voices.

The water, too, holds life.
Borne upon wind, sometimes gathering
in clouded configurations,
anticipating the moment
when the swirling eddies of pressured and rushing air
achieve the necessary imbalance
for the soil’s saturation.
Undreneath the dry sand of occasional river beds,
the ever-present but unseen waters
receive and welcome the probing roots of trees;
which gather moisture, mix it with sunlight,
and fashion it into life for leaf, insect, bird and lizard.
In the scorching sun the leaves release their own
fragrant life offering;
the sharp and cleansing eucalyptian scent
that tells of hope and renewal.

Majestic birds, darkened silhouettes
ascend and wheel. They ride heated currents,
created by the fiery sun
as it works upon rugged valleys and hills.
These were, in turn, wrought slowly
from layers of ancient rock by that same sun,
together with persistent wind
and occasional rain.
Mortal beings.
earth-bound, like the large birds that traverse
these sun-drenched plains,
observe the distant aerial manoeuvres with wonder,
and dream. A few,
kissed by this vision of freedom,
determine also to rise and to soar.

The oxide-red earth;
the unseen wind, sometimes gentle, sometimes wild;
fire from above and within;
water, cool and clear;
the human heart, dreaming and hopeful;
here creation and spirit meet
a necessary and joyous union,
for the fashioning of life and love.

Earth, wind, fire and water.

His words pelted indiscriminately
like a summer storm;
you couldn’t avoid getting soaked in his message.
John the crazy water-man
didn’t polish his words;
he left the edges pointy-sharp,
called the crowd a nest of snakes.
Some slithered away. They had come
to satisfy their curiosity,
have a laugh, and boast among their friends.
Others stayed and listened,
yearning for a speck of gold.
They copped the flaming derision
and reckoned it a fair price
as the prophet’s wave of abrasive words
crashed over them,
leaving them saturated, raw and gasping.
.
Sort yourselves out before somebody else does.
The promised one is coming,
so get yourselves ready.

The water-man talked of the advent
of a man consonant with the cosmos,
one who would embody the four elements
from which all creation
has been lovingly sculpted; and a fifth.
He will be present in and amongst earth’s dust,
bring fire to warm despondent hearts,
Spirit-wind to breathe life and hope,
and the water that alone can truly quench
the thirst inside us all.
And a fifth is eternity.

our mission

Solidarity, compassion, caring, communion and loving. Such values and inner powers can lay the foundation of a new paradigm of civilization, the civilization of the humanity reunited in the Common House, on the Planet Earth.... Our mission is to celebrate the greatness of Creation and connect it again to the Core where it came from and to where it will go, with care, lightness, joy, reverence and love. -Leonardo Boff

We thank God for you

Haiku responding to 1 Thes 1:1-10 Paul and his comrades send greetings to the church in Thessalonika. Grace to you, and peace,...
